Paint

I use more than one brand of watercolor paint. Each brand's color varies from a little to a lot. "Winsor & Newton Artists' Water Colour" (England) are what I use the most but I also have "Daniel Smith Extra Fine Watercolors" (USA), Holbein Artist's Water Color" (Japan), "Sennelier Aquarelle Extra-Fine Watercolour" (France), and "M. Graham & Company Artist's Watercolor" (USA). These are just the tube colors! I also have pan colors of "Schmincke Horadam Finest Artist Watercolors" (Germany), "Rembrandt Extra Fine Water Colours" (Holland) and "Yarka St. Petersburg Artists' Watercolours" (Russia). I guess you could say that my paints are truly international!

Daniel Smith (Seattle, WA) has a huge range of watercolors and have "Dot Try It Cards" available for purchase. They are so much fun! It's a wonderful way to discover a color you may love and want to purchase by trying it first.

What are your favorite watercolor brands?

  1. Hi Kittie. Those "dot try it" cards are wonderful! I've never before heard of them. There are two art supply stores nearby, and neither has much of a selection. Thankfully, one carries Daniel Smith [love it], Winsor Newton and Holbein. DS and WN are my mainstays. I'm keen to try Aquaboard, but they don't carry it. I keep reminding myself to renew my passport so I can get down to Daniel Smith in Seattle ...

  2. Thanks for commenting Kathryn!
We used to have four art supply stores in Pasadena (CA) but now only have one which is Dick Blick. I buy most of my artist supplies online. I really like Daniel Smith's paint and was surprised when you mentioned that other stores carry it. I thought you could only get it through Daniel Smith. Aquaboard is fun to try and takes a little getting used to. The paint reacts differently on it but the colors are more brilliant. A lot of artist's like the fact that they can be sealed and framed without glass or plex or a mat more like an oil painting.
