New Cactus Painting

Today I finished a cactus painting I started at the beginning of this month. It always feels good to complete a piece and to start a new one. It's the in-between that has so many ups and downs, little hurrahs and doubts, accomplishments and frustrations . .  .well, you get the picture!

"Sunwashed Cactus" is done on Arches 300 lb. cold press watercolor paper.

"Sunwashed Cactus", watercolor, 19"x27"       Kathleen Ballard

Here are some earlier works that are related:

"Cactus Pears", watercolor, 15"x28"  Kathleen Ballard

"Cactus Apples", watercolor, 17"x17"
"Flowering Cactus", Watercolor, 17"x17"

  1. I love the intensity of the flower buds against the more subtle "leaves". [What are those called with cacti?] It is a gorgeous composition, with such beautiful and rich colors!

  2. Hi Kathryn,
Thanks for your comments! We have so many different cactus types here in Southern California. I know this one as 'prickly pear cactus' which is probably a common name and don't now what the proper name is. This particular plant is at the Huntington Library.

  3. I love the crispness of these. Absolutely beautiful!

  4. Thank you, Aurdrey for talking a look!

  5. Love these Cacti works, your colours are delightful

  6. Hi Lorraine,
I'm glad that you like them! Thanks for your comments!

  7. Great work and a lovely blog. Keep painting.
